The ISU Speed Skating Junior World Championships held in Inzell showcased a new generation of athletes poised to become future Olympic champions.
According to ISU Skating, the championships followed the conclusion of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, presenting an opportunity for rising stars to gain recognition on the international stage. Notably, several athletes who had previously succeeded at Junior World Championships also earned Olympic titles in Milan.
In the men’s competition, Finnish skater Finn Sonnekalb emerged as a leading figure after winning the Junior Allround title last year and breaking the Junior World Record for 1500 meters during this season. Sonnekalb also participated in the recent Olympic Games but did not perform at his full potential due to illness, finishing 12th and 13th in his events. Other strong contenders included Seonung Shin, Han Man-Hyeok, Kim Junha, and Whang Seojoon from South Korea, as well as Dutch skater Ede Kortlever, each having secured victories in various Junior World Cup distances.
On the women’s side, Kristina Shumekova from Kazakhstan stood out as a frontrunner. She claimed victories in the 1000m and 3000m Junior World Cup races this season and has the potential to become Kazakhstan’s first Junior World Allround Champion. Her main competition is expected from Mette ten Cate of the Netherlands, who won the Mass Start World Cup this year and placed second in the 1500m event. Additional medal prospects include Germany’s Neele Göpelt and Poland’s Hanna Mazur and Wiktoria Dąbrowska, especially in sprint and allround events.
The championships serve as an important platform for assessing emerging talent in speed skating, reflecting the continuation of the sport’s development beyond the Olympic stage and into junior categories worldwide.
