Sebas Diniz and Suzanne Schulting took the lead following the initial 500-meter races at the Daikin Dutch Sprint Championships, positioning themselves well ahead of the afternoon’s 1,000-meter contests.
NOS Schaatsen, a Dutch news outlet, reported that Diniz recorded a winning time of 34.30 seconds, comparable to his fifth-place finish at the recent Olympic Games in Milan. Schulting, meanwhile, started strong with a personal best of 37.24 seconds after a challenging Winter Games season.
The national sprint championships provide not only titles but also World Championship qualification opportunities. Female skaters compete for two starting spots at next week’s World Championships in Heerenveen, while a single male spot remains available. On the men’s side, Diniz faces competition from Stefan Westenbroek, Janno Botman, Merijn Scheperkamp, and Kayo Vos, all clocking times within half a second of his. Tim Prins, ranked eighth in the 500-meter race, will need a strong 1,000-meter performance to contend for the national title and a World Championship berth.
Schulting’s 500-meter victory over Anna Boersma came as a surprise, with Boersma trailing by nearly a full second. Marrit Fledderus (+0.15 seconds) remained close, while Isabel Grevelt also showed promise, finishing 0.49 seconds behind Schulting. Notably absent from the event were top sprinters Femke Kok and Jutta Leerdam. Kok received a direct nomination for the World Sprint Championships, and Leerdam has ended her skating season. Additionally, 18-year-old talent Angel Daleman withdrew on Saturday.
Among the men, Jenning de Boo and Joep Wennemars also did not participate, both having been pre-selected by the Dutch skating federation (KNSB) for the upcoming World Sprint Championships. The competition continues Sunday with additional 500-meter and 1,000-meter races for both men and women.
