Femke Kok of the Netherlands set a new 500m track record and won the 1000m race on the first day of the ISU World Sprint Championships in Heerenveen, establishing a significant lead in the overall standings.
The Dutch women dominated the opening day of the competition, with Kok leading the field. Following her impressive performances, Suzanne Schulting and Marrit Fledderus, also from the Netherlands, completed the top three standings after two races. The event highlights Kok’s continued success following her recent Olympic achievements.

Kok, who entered the 500m race as the reigning Olympic Champion, World Record Holder, and Triple World Champion, expressed pride in her accomplishments. Despite the celebratory atmosphere at her home track, Kok remained focused on improving her performance. She shaved two tenths of a second off her personal best recorded at the Olympic trials in December, finishing the 500m in 36.67 seconds, the only woman to skate under 37 seconds on the day.
In the 1000m race, Kok extended her lead by finishing with a time of 1:13.10, over a second ahead of second-place finisher Suzanne Schulting. Canadian skater Béatrice Lamarche placed third, while Marrit Fledderus continued to maintain a strong presence with a fourth-place finish in both races.
As the competition moves into its second day, Kok holds a 1.18-second advantage over Schulting overall. Kok emphasized the need to stay focused to avoid mistakes, while Schulting acknowledged Kok’s strong performance but stated she would concentrate on her own races. Fledderus aims to remain on the podium, acknowledging areas for improvement following the day’s events.
For Fledderus, the World Sprint Championships represent an opportunity to regain international competitive form after not qualifying for the 2026 Olympic Games during the Dutch trials. She highlighted the importance of maintaining composure and technique to improve her results.
The ISU World Sprint Championships will continue on Friday with another 500m race scheduled at 19:00 CET and concluding with the final 1000m race at 20:23 CET.
