Jenning de Boo of the Netherlands took the lead after the first day of the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, breaking the 500m track record and maintaining strong performance in the 1000m.

De Boo set a new track record in the 500m with a time of 33.78 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by Jordan Stolz of the United States by 0.12 seconds. Stolz finished second in the 500m with a time of 34.13 seconds. Canadian skater Laurent Dubreuil placed third with a time of 34.26 seconds. Defending champion Ning Zhongyan of China came fourth in the 500m.
Following his strong 500m performance, De Boo also won the 1000m race with a time of 1 minute 6.52 seconds. His compatriot Joep Wennemars finished third in the 1000m at 1:07.37, narrowly avoiding a collision with De Boo, which had occurred in a previous competition. Ning finished fourth in the 1000m, and Stolz placed second in that race.
De Boo commented on the challenge of regaining race tension following recent Olympic success, noting that the week of celebrations made preparing for the World Championships difficult. The Dutchman said that both he and Wennemars adapted their strategies in the 1000m to avoid race interference, which helped prevent collisions between them.
Jordan Stolz had entered the championships aiming to win both the World Sprint and World Allround titles. After his two second-place finishes on day one, Stolz acknowledged the difficulty of meeting this goal, but stated he would continue to focus on each race as it comes. He sits 0.66 seconds behind De Boo in the combined rankings.
Defending sprint champion Ning Zhongyan expressed satisfaction with his personal best time of 34.36 seconds in the 500m, but also acknowledged mistakes in the 1000m. He is aiming to improve his performance in the second day of the competition.
The World Sprint Speed Skating Championships will conclude with the second 500m race at 19:36 CET and the final 1000m race at 21:21 CET on March 6, 2026, both held at the Thialf ice rink in Heerenveen.
