Joep Wennemars expressed his frustration following the conclusion of his skating season after placing fourth at the World Sprint Championships.
NOS Schaatsen, published in the Netherlands, reports on the skater’s reflections.
Speaking after the event, the 23-year-old athlete from Dalfsen said he felt exhausted and frustrated with many aspects of the sport. He indicated he was ready for the season to be over and expressed weariness with the surrounding atmosphere and media attention related to skating. Wennemars commented on the difficulty of gaining positive momentum, not only for himself but for his entire team, referring to what he described as a pervasive negative portrayal despite their daily hard work.
When pressed for details about his grievances, Wennemars declined to specify any particular issues or individuals. He resisted naming names, stating that he would not publicly identify the causes of his dissatisfaction. His season concluded without any podium finishes, following incidents that affected his performance at major competitions, including being impeded during the Olympic Games on the 1,000 meter race and a similar occurrence during the World Sprint Championships final race against De Boo.
Reflecting on these events, Wennemars mentioned that while the incidents may not have changed his overall performance weekend, they could have influenced his final ranking to a higher position.
