The World Sprint Championships in Heerenveen proved highly successful for the Netherlands, highlighted by gold medals for Jenning de Boo and Femke Kok and a Dutch sweep of the women’s podium.
According to NOS Schaatsen, both de Boo and Kok, teammates at Team Reggeborgh, set track records in the 500-meter event and maintained their lead through the final day to secure victory. Kok expressed her satisfaction, noting the joy of concluding the season with strong performances and celebrating with supporters.
Femke Kok distinguished herself as the first Dutch skater to win all four distances at a World Sprint Championship. After breaking the 500-meter track record, she remained unbeatable in subsequent races. Kok, who was undefeated on the 500 meter throughout the season, acknowledged that managing her form following the Olympic Games was challenging but rewarding, calling the season “a dream season” with aspirations for future achievements.
Jenning de Boo not only reclaimed the 500-meter track record but also outperformed American Jordan Stolz in three of the four distances. Stolz, who won Olympic gold medals in the 500 and 1,000 meters last month, competed well but was narrowly surpassed at the championships. De Boo described the experience of competing in front of a packed Thialf arena as thrilling and expressed pride in winning the world sprint title on home ice, particularly with his family present.
A recurring topic during the event was whether de Boo’s top form at these championships might have translated to Olympic gold had it occurred earlier. While the question lingered, de Boo focused on the present achievement, emphasizing pride and contentment with his world championship success separate from Olympic outcomes.
