Magnussen has taken the opportunity presented to him and remains the only Norwegian to maintain a competitive presence internationally in sprint skating.
Schaatsen.nl, published in the Netherlands, reports that Magnussen’s progress in recent years benefited significantly from the guidance of Canadian coach Jeremy Wotherspoon. Wotherspoon, a four-time world champion and winner of multiple individual sprint titles, recently left his role as head coach of the Norwegian sprint team after ten seasons to join the Canadian skating federation.
Magnussen acknowledges the impact of his former coach and teammates, stating that he has learned much from them. He is now seeking new challenges with different people and environments to further his development. His results show promise but also highlight the need for improvement to compete among the world’s sprint elites.
One notable achievement is Magnussen’s 33.99-second 500-meter race at the Salt Lake City World Cup event last season. This performance placed him among a select group of fifteen men worldwide to have completed the distance in under 34 seconds. The all-time leaderboard is led by Russia’s Pavel Kulizhnikov with 33.61 seconds, followed closely by Jenning de Boo with 33.63 and Kazakhstan’s Yevgeniy Koshkin with 33.67.
