Merel Conijn Joins Team Novus Under Coach Johan de Wit

Merel Conijn has announced her move to Team Novus starting this summer, marking a significant step in her speed skating career under the guidance of head coach Johan de Wit.

Schaatsen.nl, a Dutch sports news outlet, reports on Conijn’s transition to Team Novus after spending two years with Team Zaanlander.

Conijn expressed enthusiasm about joining Team Novus, describing the move as a sense of coming home and an opportunity to bring together various aspects of her career. The key factor influencing her decision was the presence of Johan de Wit as head coach. De Wit had supported her since she was seventeen through the Ringen om Volendam foundation, which assists talented athletes with funding. After the dissolution of Team Gold, which ended on a high note with Zhongyan Ning’s Olympic title, De Wit focused on revitalizing Team Novus.

Initially, Conijn had planned to continue with Team Zaanlander. However, the proposal of joining Team Novus remained in her mind, prompting her to reach out to De Wit for a chance to join. His positive response led to her informing Team Zaanlander coach Jillert Ankerman of her departure. She appreciated the understanding and support she received, with Ankerman encouraging her to follow her instincts and assuring her that she would always be welcome back. Conijn expressed gratitude towards her former team and staff for their support over the past two years.
