Stijn van de Bunt secured his place in the upcoming Winter Olympics by winning the 5,000-meter race at the Olympic qualification tournament, a remarkable achievement considering he sustained a broken back over the summer.

The 21-year-old skater from Lopik, representing IKO-X20, surprised many by not only winning the national Olympic qualifying event in Heerenveen but also earning his ticket to the Winter Games. His performance was unexpected after he suffered a serious accident during a cycling trip in Andorra, where he collided with a car, resulting in broken ribs and a spinal injury that required several days of hospitalization and prevented him from training for an extended period.
Despite these obstacles, Van de Bunt’s determination and resilience allowed him to defeat established top skaters such as Chris Huizinga, Marcel Bosker, and Beau Snellink. His winning time of 6 minutes and 9.30 seconds was met with surprise even from his own coach, Martin ten Hove, who praised Van de Bunt for his composure during both his own race and those of his competitors.
Van de Bunt acknowledged that he had not previously been the best skater, coming from a background in roller skating where he initially excelled more. He was identified as a talent about four to five years ago, after which he joined TalentNED and gradually improved to compete at a national and international level. Coach Ten Hove noted that Van de Bunt had shown promise during junior world championships and that his recent victory marks a significant step forward in his career.
Looking ahead to the Winter Olympics in Milan, Van de Bunt and his coach are cautious about expectations but optimistic about further progress. They recognize the strength of the competition in the Netherlands but remain hopeful that Van de Bunt can continue to develop and possibly contend for a medal in the future.
