Utah Speedskater Casey Dawson First to Qualify for Team USA, Credits Pancakes and Determination

Casey Dawson, a speedskater from Utah, has become the first athlete to qualify for Team USA for the upcoming Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, a milestone supported by his consistent training and a unique pre-race diet.

According to KSLTV.com in the United States, Dawson revealed that he eats pancakes before nearly every race, a tradition he has maintained since high school. He described pancakes as an ideal source of carbohydrates and fuel, contributing to his performance. The Park City native has expressed passion for the sport since childhood, being recognized early on for his potential to reach the Olympic level.

Dawson regularly trains at the Utah Olympic Oval and shares his rigorous preparation routines on social media. He highlighted the demands of speedskating, noting the precision required to race on skates with blades only an eighth of an inch wide at speeds close to 40 miles per hour. Mistakes during such high-speed races can be decisive, emphasizing the sport’s difficulty.

Reflecting on challenges from the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where he faced COVID-19 infections and lost his skates en route to competition, Dawson described his journey as one of redemption. Borrowing skates from other athletes then, he now aims to build on that experience and focus on his performance without external distractions.

He concluded by stating his goal for the season is to skate well and fast, using the lessons learned from the previous Olympics to strengthen his competitive approach.
