Ireen Wüst Beune won the 1500-meter World Cup for the fourth time this winter, yet the victory was marked by mixed emotions as she reflected on missing the chance to compete in the Olympic Games.

After her latest win, Beune made a dismissive gesture upon realizing that her Japanese rival Miho Takagi did not beat her time, securing her top position once again. However, the triumph did not bring the satisfaction typically associated with such achievements. A mistake in a curve combined with strong competition had prevented Beune from qualifying for the 1500 meters event at the Olympic Qualification Tournament (OKT) held in late December, which ultimately barred her from competing in Milan.
Following her race in Inzell, Beune spoke to NOS and expressed the complexity of her emotions. She shared that her coach had commented he thought she might have preferred finishing fourth in the Olympics to not being able to compete at all. Beune acknowledged that while winning is always gratifying, this particular victory felt different and less enjoyable than others.
The 26-year-old skater explained that although she had mentally prepared herself for this outcome, the disappointment was still present. She emphasized her belief in her capability to win Olympic gold, but lamented the loss of the chance to prove it on the Olympic stage. “It’s a shame,” Beune said, highlighting the bittersweet nature of her current success.
