The upcoming Dutch Speed Skating Championships will see skaters competing for four national titles and three spots for the World Allround & Sprint Championships, all set to take place at Thialf.

The championships offer four Dutch titles: two from the sprint tournament and two from the allround competition. Additionally, three starting positions for the World Allround & Sprint Championships, scheduled from March 5 to 8 at Thialf, will be granted. Nine skaters have already been selected for this world event. Jenning de Boo, Joep Wennemars, Femke Kok, and Jutta Leerdam are slated to compete in the World Sprint Championship, while Stijn van de Bunt, Chris Huizinga, Joy Beune, Antoinette Rijpma – de Jong, and Marijke Groenewoud have secured places for the World Allround Championship. However, since the KNSB (Royal Dutch Skating Federation) has designated three women directly for the allround event, the winner of the national allround tournament will not receive an automatic starting spot at the world level.
The allround events are structured with women racing the 500 and 3000 meters on Saturday, followed by the 1500 and 5000 meters on Sunday. Men compete in the 500 and 5000 meters on the first day, concluding with the 1500 and 10,000 meters on the second day. The skater with the fastest overall time across these four distances claims the national title.
For the sprint category, skaters race identical distances on both days: a 500 and 1000 meters each on Saturday and Sunday. The overall ranking is based on times from these four sprints. Precision is critical as any small error on these short distances can affect the final outcome significantly.
Although many Olympic medalists have opted out of participation, which has somewhat reduced the event’s prestige, the championships still promise engaging competition. In the men’s sprint tournament, Tim Prins and Merijn Scheperkamp are the leading contenders. Having missed out on the Olympic Games, both are eager to demonstrate their capabilities at Thialf. Kai Verbij, the 2017 world champion, is also expected to challenge the frontrunners strongly.
